Sometimes it can go wrong The European Commission issued a pre-Christmas in December last year that nearly one third of festive lights could be a “serious safety risk”. Tests were carried out in Germany, Hungary, Slovenia, Slovakia and the Netherlands, on nearly 200 sets of “lighting chains” in all price categories. Many failed comprehensively, said a Commission report, with just over 30% of the samples from the five countries at serious risk of starting a fire or causing electric shocks – or both. The risks found in 30.4% of the samples derived from technical safety failings often resulting from the construction of plugs, cord anchorages, wiring, and insulation against electric shock. Less serious problems found in 40% of the sample posed no direct risk of harm, but involved failing to meet legal requirements in labelling and instructions for use.

The report showed that:

25% of lighting chains failed the safety tests for the cord anchorage, risking electric wires coming loose with a high risk of electric shock;
23% had wiring too thin for the electric current being carried, risking overheating and fire;
28 % failed the safety tests for the insulation properties of the lighting chain, risking electric shock.
The origin of 41% of the chains was China, said the report, although under EU law, distributors, retailers and importers share legal responsibility with the manufacturers for the safety of the products they put on the market.
The worst offender amongst the member states involved in the survey was Hungary, where 95.7% of chains tested posed serious risk to consumers.
In contrast only 56% of festive lights sampled from the Netherlands revealed any type of failure to meet the rules, and few posed a safety risk.

How much does it cost?
That is entirely up to you. There is a set cost for installing and removing the lights and that would depend on how many lights. There may also be pre-electrical work that may have to be carried out (installing RCDs, sockets, cable etc). The only other cost is the cost of the lights. If you wish we can source good quality lights for you or you can purchase them yourself and we will look after the safe installation.

What about my electricity bill?
This would depend on what type of lights you have or require. If you use power efficient LEDs they would run at a fraction of the cost of normal incandescent bulbs.

How long does it take to put the lights up?
It takes about two and six hours to get all the lights up although this is weather-dependent. We will guarantee that the lights will be installed or removed on the day we agree.

Do you wrap lights around trees?
Yes we can. However you must realise that wrapping trees is extremely time consuming, but the result is spectacular.

Despite rigorous quality controls, ASDA has been made aware of a fault with its Smartprice Indoor Christmas Lights, an ASDA Tree-Topper and ASDA 100 Double-Filament Lights. Some of the lights, on sale since September 2003, have been assembled with a faulty fuse bulb. This allows the lights potentially to overheat which could be a fire risk. As a precautionary measure, ASDA has withdrawn all these products and is urging customers who have bought any of them to remove them from display and return them to their nearest store as soon as possible. All customers returning these products will be given a full refund and a £5 ASDA voucher. ASDA apologises sincerely for the inconvenience caused.
